Hivemind turns two!
Daniel Mitchell •
It’s two years today since seven of us decided to leave our roles in a global investment management company, Winton Group, to start our new lives as co-founders of Hivemind. The two years since then have been a huge learning curve — and thoroughly rewarding.
Below we’ve collected a few of our favourite and most memorable moments so far. As we look back, we’d like to thank all our customers, our investors, partners, friends, and all of those who have had a kind word to say along the way. We really appreciate your continued support and can’t wait to see where the journey will take us in the years to come.
Until the contract is signed, nothing is real.
Irrespective of how exciting it was to spin out from Winton, nothing brings home the grown-up seriousness of a decision quite like signing a table-full of legal agreements about it. I think you can see more than a little bit of fear in this photo.
The spin-out got us some good press coverage in the FT and The Economist and we signed a handful of clients in the first couple of months, making it seem like this startup thing was a breeze. This could not have been further from the truth, and we were brought down to earth by the arrival in the post of “Starting & Running a Business” from the ‘for dummies’ series sent by an anonymous source… it has actually proved quite useful.
Finding a home
An important coming-of-age moment in any company’s life is moving into its first office. Here’s day one in our first Oxford office. It was a mess by mid-morning.
An even more definitive coming of age moment in the life of a startup is securing investment and in Feb 2019 we were very fortunate to have received investment from two titans of the financial world, Fidelity International and Barclays.
On the back of the investment, our family doubled from seven to 14. Building the team out and discovering how the company can develop with new ideas and energy has been the most rewarding part of the last two years. Here we all are at our Summer BBQ and Christmas party last year.
Working with great companies
We’ve worked with a wonderful range of companies of all shapes and sizes over the last year. It’s great to see how innovative and imaginative people are being with data and how committed they are to producing great results, and of course to learn how Hivemind can help them! Here’s a snap of some of us chatting with the friendliest company on Earth, Cloudfactory.
Innovator of the Year
The conference circuit has been good to us over the last two years; we’ve had some great times presenting at, and being involved in conferences across the globe. Most memorable though must be winning Innovator of the Year at the FIA Expo in Chicago in October 2019. Here’s Christian Gilson, our Head of Data Science collecting the award.
And finally, lockdown! I have no doubt this will become a definitive period for us as for many companies across the world in many different sectors. So far, we’ve been hugely productive with the release of two new products: VELOS, an all-in-one text annotation service, and AGORA, a prediction market platform which we’ve released in beta.
The last two years have been an incredible experience, and the future promises to be just as exciting. Thank you if you’ve been part of our journey so far, and if you haven’t then get in touch with us - we’d love to hear from you.
